T20 Stats Explained: Strike Rate, Average & Impact

Every cricket argument online eventually becomes a fight about numbers, and most of those numbers are being misread. This 66 Letter Club guide explains what strike rate, average, economy and “impact” actually measure — and how to read a T20 scorecard without fooling yourself. Updated July 2026.

Quick answer

Strike rate = runs ÷ balls × 100 (scoring speed). Average = runs ÷ dismissals (reliability). Economy = runs conceded ÷ overs (containment). None of them mean anything without role, phase and sample size attached — and none of them predict a result.

Strike rate: speed, and only speed

Strike rate is the simplest calculation in cricket and the most abused. Divide runs by balls faced, multiply by 100. Forty-five from thirty balls is a strike rate of 150. That is the whole formula.

What it does not tell you is anything about difficulty. It does not know whether those thirty balls came against a part-time bowler in the eighth over or against a death specialist defending a small total. It does not know the pitch, the ground dimensions or the required rate. A strike rate is a speedometer reading with no map attached — genuinely useful, entirely incomplete.

Average: reliability, with a T20 asterisk

Batting average divides runs by dismissals, and it answers a different question: how much does this batter typically contribute before getting out? In Test cricket that is close to the whole story. In T20 it carries an asterisk, because a batter whose job is to attack from ball one will inevitably get out more often, and that is not a failure — it is the role working as designed. A high average achieved by playing safely for eight overs can be worth less to a team than a lower average achieved at pace. Read the two together, always.

Phases: the context that fixes both

A T20 innings is really three innings stitched together, and almost every misleading statistic comes from ignoring which one you are looking at:

  • Powerplay (overs 1–6): fielding restrictions, hard ball, high risk and high reward. Strike rates run high; so do dismissals.
  • Middle (overs 7–15): spin, spread fields, and the phase where matches are quietly decided. Rotation and boundary-hitting against spin matter most here.
  • Death (overs 16–20): maximum risk, specialist bowling, tiny margins. Both batting and bowling numbers look extreme by design.

Once you attach a phase to a number, most of the confusion disappears. It is also why the young Indian batters discussed in India’s young T20 core cannot be ranked against each other on a single column.

Economy and bowling strike rate

On the bowling side, economy rate — runs conceded per over — is usually the headline in T20, because four tight overs can win a match without a single wicket. Bowling strike rate (balls per wicket) matters more when a team needs breakthroughs rather than containment. The two often point in different directions, and a captain picks based on what the situation demands. Sample size: the silent distortion

This is the one that catches everybody. When a player has faced very few innings, a single score can swing their career average by a huge margin, which is why prodigies so often appear statistically superhuman for a few weeks. Nothing has gone wrong with the data — there simply is not enough of it yet. Before you quote a number, look at how many innings it rests on. Why two sites show different figures

It is rarely an error. One table may cover all T20s, another only senior international cricket, another only a single franchise league; date ranges differ; updates land at different times. Before deciding a statistic is wrong, check the scope note.
