Depth is the story

For most of cricket history, a national side’s problem was finding enough top-order batters. India in 2026 has the opposite problem in T20: a queue of young attacking players, several of them capable of changing a game in three overs, and nowhere near enough slots to accommodate them.

That surplus is why selection debates have become so heated and why so much online “news” is actually speculation. When a genuine case can be made for six players and only three can play, every fan gets to be right, and nobody can be proven wrong until a squad is announced by the BCCI.

The roles, not the names

The most useful mental model is to stop thinking about a batting order and start thinking about jobs. A modern T20 side is assembled from role specialists:

• The powerplay attacker. Six overs of fielding restrictions, minimal protection on the boundary, and a mandate to take risks early. Abhishek Sharma is the archetype of this role in the current group.

Roles explain selections that look strange on a spreadsheet. A player with a lower average can be picked ahead of one with a higher average because the job is different.

Why franchise runs do not automatically convert

Franchise cricket is the most visible shop window in the game, and a big season genuinely helps. But it is not a queue where the top run-scorer walks in next. Selectors weigh how a player’s method holds up in unfamiliar conditions, whether their role duplicates someone already in the side, their fielding value, their workload, and the balance of the squad as a whole. That is why a heavy scorer sometimes waits a year while a player with quieter numbers gets picked for a specific job.

Reading their numbers without fooling yourself

Comparing young batters is where most fan arguments go wrong, because the comparisons are rarely like for like. A finisher batting five overs a game will have a worse average than an opener almost by definition, and a powerplay strike rate is a different animal from a death-overs one. Sample size makes it worse: at this stage of a career, one big innings can swing an average dramatically.
